Hi
I sat in a studio all weekend with two passionate young female theatre makers, both from Cairns, one forging a career in theatre mentoring young people in a pathways project here and another pursuing her acting studies at Victorian College of the Arts (VCA). The weekend of auditions involved 16 young people, bravely taking control of their nerves and presenting some well-crafted monologues to the panel. Congratulations to The Young Company Theatre, School Drama Teachers and the JUTE Actors Studio for investing in our local young people. What an inspiring way to spend a weekend. JUTE is partnering with Amber from Overall Arts on this project and I can't wait for our audience to see the outcome showcase at Bulmba-ja Arts Centre. Watch this space for more information.

Board Observer - Expression of Interest
|
|
|
We are offering an opportunity for one young (18 – 30 years) emerging leader to take up an observation position on the JUTE Board of Directors. The observer role will allow you to understand the process of joining a board and what to expect when you are on a board. The Board Observer is invited to attend all monthly meetings of the JUTE Board of Directors, held either virtually (during COVID-19 restrictions) or face to face. Diversity is key for JUTE and we encourage people from diverse backgrounds to take this opportunity.

The City of The Arts Hero
JUTE is very excited to receive Cairns City Council's Inaugural City of Arts Hero grant of $25,000 towards the cost of producing a new work 'La Bella Figura' by local writers Frank Dangelico, Roz Pappalardo and Kathryn Ash. JUTE is the only grant recipient for the inaugural year, so wow! We feel very honoured! Watch this space to hear more about the production, slated for October 2021, a landmark theatre-with-music fun celebration of Italian- Australian culture in the Far North.

JUTE has partnered with Centracare FNQ to bring workshops into the SPAYC+PLACE program. This term we have engaged three local artists- Susan Prince, Rubina Kimiia and Taeg Twist to work with a group of over 20 migrants and refugees from Burma, Congo, Uganda and Burundi, men, women and children (some as young as 2!) putting together a performance piece called The Lullaby Project. Using lullabies in their own languages, syncopated movement and live music the group will perform the work at Bulmaba-ja Arts Centre later next month.
If you would like to know more about this project, please contact our office info@jute.com.au or call 4281 6832.

Changes to the Blue Card System
For those of you who have been engaged to work with us on one of our programs with children, JUTE just wanted to alert you to the upcoming changes to the Blue Card System. From 31 August, the No Card, No Start law comes into effect. This means that paid workers must have a valid blue card (no longer a pending application) before they can work with children. New rules around expiring cards and an expiry date for exemption card are just some of the changes
